Now... Our adventure begins with your Host: Joe Rayborne
Hi,
welcome to The Adventure of Joe Rayborne as we explore more of the
best of the Bay Area. So, Get ready to be indulged in the most
delightful tastiest organic foods around... The Farmers Market... In
the next few weeks, we'll visit many different types of Farmer
market through out the Bay Area. So, come along and explore with me
into the vast regions of the Bay Area.
I'll start
my journey in
Los Gatos
exploring the market as the oysters are at its fascinating tastes of
the season. Then head my way to Campbell where the Highland games
plays and the kilts are in, and on down to Santana Row, the ancient
modern European fashionable stylish City. As the French bread’s are
it’s sweetest taste. From there, we’ll head over to downtown
Milpitas;
the Quiet town and the foods there are quite imaginative...
Then we'll
take 680 souths to 101 south to Downtown Morgan Hill where the
mushrooms are wild, with its golden color, famous for the Mushroom
Martigras. Then on south to
Gilroy,
the garlic Capital of the world where the Garlic keeps the Heart
it’s cleanest as I end my journey there.
First
off... The city of
Los Gatos,
CA. More than any other city is a place to get out early or stay out
late - to be swept away. On every corner is an excuse to savor the
magic of this aged old city that was established in 1887, with it's
architecturally stylish designs that lavishly grabs the attention of
the crowd as this old downtown gives it's romantic look for the
tourist from all around.
There,
with this tiny little intersection park in the heart of downtown,
gives a unique look of style with it's beautiful surrounding trees
that gives the farmers market a unique place for a good setting.
Along with the beautiful majestic water fountain that centers this
tiny old park.
Here, the
fountain stays off during the hours of operation, which keeps the
foods from getting wet or damaged as well as the crowd. But in the
mid-afternoon, the fountain is turned on as it gives it's burst of
water like old faithful as the children play in the fountain, which
gives all the more reason for the tourist to indulged for.
I meet up
with Mel who is one of the founders of the
Los Gatos
farmers Market and takes me on a tour, as she explains all the
details we need know about the difference of organic and non-organic
foods. She explains why it is so important to know the difference of
being certified and non-certified.
She
explains the importance of why the farmers come so early in the
morning to set up the foods and products for display and the
difference of their products, how they process them and why it is so
important.
Joe:
Why is it so important for the farmers to get here so early
in the morning?
Mel:
The reason they get here so early, so that they can get their entire
booth and products set up for display. This way, it will give them
the opportunity to have a nice presentation to attract the
customer’s attention.
Joe:
That's
impressive... So tell us the details of what we should know about
these products and foods.
Mel:
I’d be
happy to... Over here is a display of organic foods.
Joe:
Organic? really, is there any particular difference?
Mel:
OH yes, every little bit.
And
everyone should know... a difference that is. What the taste is
like. As a festival to some, and a delight to others to enjoy.
Mel:
Each one
of the organic foods is naturally grown without the entire chemical
process, and is then processed and cleaned in order to sell to
public. When you look over here and see this sign, you will notice
that it says Certified... It also let the public know who is
certified and not. Joe: Certified? Really, and what is
that for and why? Mel: Being certified means that the
foods you grow are naturally grown and states that it is chemically
free. Non-certified on the other hand, means that it is chemically
treated, which keeps insects and other danger that may cause damage
to the foods. So Growing organic foods take a lot more work and care
which is why the food tastes so much better... Here, try
this. Joe: Oh WOW.
That is good. Mel: Now try
this. Joe: Oh yeah,
there a difference in the taste here. I can see why they grow
organic foods and yet, you can see that it is much healthier for us,
with out all those chemicals floating around in our bodies. Organic
is the way for me.
And every
part of this is important to know and understand... And meanwhile,
Mel introduces me to the vendors as they share their insight about
their products.
Mel:
Over here,
you can see that there is a difference in the look and how it
tastes. Here, taste this... Joe: Oh wow,
that is good. It’s a different taste of its own and yet it tastes
better than the grocery store. Mel: YES... It is
really good and let me introduce you to the vendor. She will tell
you a little more about her products. Vendor: Of Course,
These veggies are very fresh and are hand picked, washed early
morning and brought here to sell. Which is why the people come here
to shop.
You can
see all the more reason why the shoppers come every weekend to shop
for the freshest foods and tasty delight, which finds all the more
excuses for the shoppers to come and get the best of the best.
Vendor:
Try this one and see what you think. Joe: Now
this is really good here and it is much better tasting than the
stores has it. I can see why you farmers work so hard to make sure
the fruits and veggies are fresh so that we can eat better and
healthier. Vendor: Now you got it and
it is worth it. Mel: Yeah, come with me and let
me show you some other products that you will find very interesting.
She
introduces me to this vendor that has an unusual product that is
rather interesting that you probably never see at a farmers
market...
Mel:
Here is a
vender that will tell you about this product for dogs.
Joe:
DOGS? Now that IS interesting. What is it that these bisques are so
different to the others? And why the farmers market?
Vendor 2: well, these
are pure organic and it is far better for the dogs. It puts
healthier skin on them and their weight much more manageable yet, in
the long run; it is healthier for them anyway. In fact, people can
eat the bisques too. Here... Try this, you’ll like this.
Joe: WHAT! Oh, Well... All right, I’ll give it a
try, why not. Vendor
2: It’s really good, I’ll eat it too and it’s really good.
Joe: Ok,
here goes... BOW WOW... Hey! This is really good. That’s a different
taste of it’s own. Vendor 2: HAHAHAHAHA...
It really does make a difference.
I was a
rather surprised about the bisques and how interesting the taste
turned out to be. Although, the dog bisques are made strictly from
organic foods, which makes it a lot healthier for dogs to eat yet,
have plenty of energy. And gives a good reason to bring your pets to
the market.
Vendor 2:
We created these bisque for dogs because the dogs we have, we’re
eating the bisques we gave to them and found that their diet was a
lot better. They had a lot more energy and cleaner teeth’s. So we
decided to make large quantities and sell them. Now we’re doing it
in dog foods too. Joe: How is this compared to
the other products that are sold in pet stores?
Vendor 2:
Their
products have all the artificial flavorings and additives.
Our products are per natural, which is pure, organic and believe it
or not, we can even eat it too. Also our products are little more
reasonable than the others are. Joe: Oh, I see. That makes it
easier for the customer to understand it better, right?
Vendor 2: Of course...
Joe: That’s great and I appreciate you
sharing all this information with me.
Vendor 2: My pleasure.
After
shaking hands with the vendor, Mel takes me over to introduce me to
Steve Glickman who is the Vice-Mayor of Los Gatos and shares with me
his involvement with the farmers market as he brings me over to the
oyster bar.
He treats
me to a delightful taste of oysters and which, by the way, are for a
dollar apiece. Which there is no other place like it around.
Joe:
what is your involvement in the marker and how your interest is
helping Mel and others here. Steve: I help Mel
organize the market by overseeing the interest of the public and for
the location. Also getting more involved with the public interest;
to encourage them to come more often here. Here, try an oyster, it
on me. They are really good.
Joe: Great, thanks. Don’t mind if I
do... Oh my, that is really tasty.
Steve: I know, that why I like coming here,
not just for the market itself, but also for the great taste of the
oysters. Joe: I can see why, I haven’t had this good of
tasty oysters in a long time at least 20 years. But with a price you
can’t beat, it sure does bring a large crowd around. I can see that
all of you agree.
As the
crowd cheers excitedly, the booth gives a more enchanting look and
the oyster to die for is a delicacy you will want to savor for. With
a price you can’t beat anywhere and all the more reason to come and
enjoy a good conversation with the crowd. The Oyster vender gives a
good reason why his oysters are so much better compared to others.
Which is why you should come and enjoy the soothing silky taste of
his oysters.
Joe:
Tell me, why do you come here and why the farmers market and not a
restaurant? Is there something that you like about the farmers
market? Yet, your price is very reasonable. Vendor 3:
Better crowd and better setting, which is easier for me to come and
go and people know me now and can enjoy a conversations and the
price is reasonable to for them to be able to but more when they
like it so much. These oysters are fresh daily so that it is easier
to work with. Joe: Well, let me tell you... The
oyster are incredibly delicious and out of this world taste. Thanks
for sharing that with me, and Steve, thanks for the treat.
Steve: My pleasure and do come back again.
Joe: Thanks and I will. Have a great day...
After
leaving the oyster bar, I did a little shopping for myself, picked a
few tools up and enjoyed a good little chat with the tool guy that
was sharpening the knifes. Then I bought a few plants for my studio
as the Florist showed me some really cool plants that are stylish
and would look good for my place then chatted with a few of the
crowds about what they liked in the market.
After
leaving
Los Gatos,
I head my way over to downtown
Campbell
to meet with Ron Pardini who happens to be my guide for this market.
He explains to me about this market and the vendor’s products and
what his involvement is.
Ron:
I make
sure that all the farmers are in line with our layout and that there
are not too many of the same products but difference areas of aspect
that goes meet our criteria. Joe: I see... But I do see
that they’re a few different types of vendor’s and not a whole lot
of food booths. Ron: Yes, but if you look a
little closer, you’ll see that some of them are processed and jarred
as well. Joe: so, what is it that makes this Market
so different and distinct from the other markets?
Ron: If you look over here, you’ll
see a large kettle popper where they make fresh sweet popcorn and on
the other side you’ll the fish market where they other different
types of fish and shell fish they sell.
Joe: I see... I notice that there were some
photographers and art paintings. Why is that?
Ron: People like to have their pictures taken
and yet collect arts for their enjoyment and style. Which of course,
brings more attraction to this market so that it has the unique
style with taste that draws more attention to the crowd. Why don’t
you take walk around, talk to a few of the vendor’s, ask about their
products and what they like about this market.
Joe:
Thanks, I will do that and I really appreciate you sharing with me
about the Campbell farmers market. Ron: You’re
welcome and enjoy shopping here at the market.
This
market is definitely a place to enjoy in this old downtown where
traditions meets the modern world and is popular for the big water
tower and a unique way of attracting men in Kilts, especially me.
But this
isn’t just any old tradition – The tradition in bringing farmers
together, and their product to life that characterizes the imaginary
presentations. Part of the fun – and little expense – of enjoying
the farmers market is tasting the foods and chatting with the crowd.
For
Campbell, the town is a marvelous playground when it come to
enjoying the music, dancing and the different fascination of the
foods - for the enjoyment of the crowds – winter or summer, rain or
shine. They keep coming and they’ve made many of the most exciting
spots easily accessible by the VTA train and public transit bus –
like this.
Modern
tourism has perked up the local economy as well and the downtown
market operates like a big family. I venture my way through this
market to see what I can find – to see what I can find what is tasty
to savor my fancy. First off, I quickly make my way through the
crowd to get to the popcorn kettle that has a sweet taste that keeps
bringing you back for more…
Joe:
What is that every body raves about you popcorn that causes them to
come back for more? Kettle operator:
The way I put the oil, sugar, spices and butter, mixing with the
corn and how fast it cooks. But also how the right temperature
brings out the taste. Try this... Joe: Oh wow, that is good.
It definitely brings a unique taste to the popcorn. This is my first
time I’ve this type kettle cooking.
Kettle operator: That is why we
do it here because there is there is like no other around here, so
it gives the crowd something different to eat.
Joe: great! I’ll take a bag.
Kettle operator: Here you go...
That’ll be three dollars. Joe: Here’s five and thanks. Have a
great day. Kettle Operator: You’re welcome and
enjoy...
A small
bag of kettle corn is $3.00; a big one is $5.00. You’ll find that
the kettle corn is definitely a place to stop by first, to buy a bag
and eat along the strip while you’re shopping at the market.
My next
stop is the fish market. The fish are as fresh looking for the
buyers to indulge for and the temptation is something you can’t
resist when it comes to tasting. So I, knowing myself couldn’t
resist, had to take a taste of the sushi.
Joe:
What kind
sushi you have there? Fish Vendor: This
the Japanese Sushi and we get our fish fresh daily here.
Joe: Now sounds really
good, I would like to try this one here.
Fish Vendor: Here you go,
this one should be good here. Joe: OH WOW this is very
good.
Knowing
that I couldn’t resist myself, I brought a few to cook for dinner.
Since I love to cook, my crew and I will have a good meal to enjoy.
Joe:
I’ll take few of these and will be good for dinner. Fish
Vendor: Ok, those will be excellent for cooking especially when
you cook it with white wine as a flavoring sauce.
Joe: Oh yeah, it’ll be
great with white wine. Well, thanks very much and have great day.
Fish Vendor: Your welcome and
same to you.
I decided
to head over to the Orchard Valley Coffee Shop and stop in for a cup
of coffee and chat a little with the owner shared with me a little
about the coffee bean cooker.
Joe:
Hey! How are you doing? Manager:
Great and you? Joe: Oh, I am
doing well. What you got going here? Manager: Well, I
am cooking the coffee beans so that we have some
ready for the week and for our clientele. Joe:
Tell me, how does coffee cooker work? Manager:
Well, what I is first of all, is set my temperature and make proper
corrections so that when I put the coffee beans through the top
here, the beans will cook at an even temperature.
Joe: So how do
you get different colors and taste and how long does it take for
cooking the beans? Manager: I adjust my
temperature settings to get the right amount of color, which gives
it a light or dark roasted flavor and the taste.
Manager:
It takes about a 30 minutes to two hours depending on the on how you
want the beans to turn out. I can also mix some different kinds of
bean together to create my own flavor of coffee.
Joe: Wow! That is really
cool and thanks for sharing that with me.
(CONTINUED)
Manager:
My
pleasure, glad to be of help to you. You have a nice now, bye.
Joe: Thanks,
bye.
Soon as we
got back to the, we drove off to Santana Row where the Farmers
Market was and found some great food and entertainment there. I
chatted with a few vendors and the folks there were pretty people
friendly.
The French
Bread Company I saw there and had to go check it out and find out to
see if they have the soft French bread which of course is my
favorite.
Joe:
Wow, what a refreshing taste to see you guys here. Do you happen to
have the soft French bread here? Vendor: Yes
we do, in fact, try this one. You’ll love this one, it’s sweet and
very soft and all our dreads are fresh here too. Joe: Oh
yeah, that is really good. I’ll take a couple of these here.
Vendor: Here you go.
Joe: Thanks and
have a nice day.
The French
Bread Company has been around for many years and has cooked really
good quality breads for some time now and have satisfied many
customers.
I‘ve
chatted with a few of the people and found that they’ve shared with
me their views on how they enjoy the farmers market. They tell me
that shopping here is getting better fresh foods here is for there
own needs especially when it comes to eating healthy, and the locals
of Santana Row residents as well feel as though it is all the
comforts of home along with entertainment that is so enjoyable.
Before
leaving Santana Row, I had to stop in at Pete’s Coffee Shop to
definitely get another cup of coffee. Of course, I needed my energy
for the day and brought some for my crew too. We headed over to the
park and took a coffee break and enjoy the nice surrounding scenery.
After our
break, we left Santana row and headed over to old town
Milpitas
to check out the farmers market there, picked up a few produce,
browsed a little then headed our way down to
Morgan
Hill.
Upon
arriving there at
Morgan
Hill, we checked out the music, danced a bit chatted with a few
people. Morgan Hill is popular for it’s mushroom Martigras where you
can find the freshest tender mushrooms around. Today, they have a
few here to check out.
Joe:
I see some mushrooms here that are different from the others. Why is
that? Vendor: These
mushroom are grown in Monterey and these are grown in here in
Gilroy. That shows the color and size of the them. These are the
golden one’s you want here, they’re the tastiest ones.
Joe: OK great, I’ll these
golden ones... Vendor: Here you go.
Joe: Thanks and have a
great day.
I decided
to drop in at an old friend of mine 'Betsy’s Restaurant' and eat
there. I talk to the Girls for a bit while I was eating as they
shared with me how they are involved with the City of
Morgan
Hill and of course they cracked joke about my Kilt and Mustache.
You enjoy
a good meal for 8 bucks, which turns out to be hardy meal with a
good deal you, can’t beat. After that, we headed for
Gilroy
and ended our journey there.
Finally
arriving in
Gilroy, we
met up with the manager of the farmers market as he shares with us
about the old town market.
Manager:
I make
sure that all the farmers are in line with our layout and that there
are not too many of the same products but difference areas of aspect
that goes meet our criteria.
Joe: I see... But I do see that they’re a few different
types of vendor’s and not a whole lot of food booths.
Manager: Yes, but if you look a little closer, you’ll
see that some of them are processed and jarred as well. Joe:
so, what is it that makes this Market so different and distinct from
the other markets? Manager: Yes,
This market here has been around for over 80 years or more and the
people still tend to come each week year
around. Joe: I
see... That’s a long time and I notice that there were some
photographers and art paintings. Why is that? Manager:
People like to have their pictures taken and yet collect arts for
their enjoyment and style. Which of course, brings more attraction
to this market so that it has the unique style with taste that draws
more attention to the crowd. Why don’t you take walk around, talk to
a few of the vendor’s, ask about their products and what they like
about this market.
Joe: Thanks, I will do that and I really appreciate you
sharing with me about the Campbell farmers market. Manager:
You’re welcome and enjoy shopping here at the market and thanks for
coming.
And so I
did, I browsed around, talk to a few new people, made some new
friends and stopped in at the coffee shop to have one more cup of
coffee of the.
Well, that
concludes our journey here. I hope you enjoyed my show and thanks
for watching. You can visit me at my website. Until then, explore
and travel safe. Chow Baby...
